Twenty years ago, I marched on Washington, DC to demand gay rights. Even seeing the AIDS Quilt again chokes me up. I’m so sad thinking about all those who died before seeing the fruit (ahem) of their activism, but totally grateful for the changes for the better they inspired.

In other news, I am old.

…of a window garden full of gigantic insects, including a fat black millipede, a centipede covered in mucus, and a bunch of red caterpillars. A big yellow crab took up most of the space: there were more arthropods than plants.

Later, I sat on a panel of gay scientists to discuss this garden crab, but he audience challenged our supposed lack of knowledge of gay culture. One audience member asked me if even knew what being gay meant. I took a deep breath and said, “Gurr…”

The event is open to the public and admission is free.

This conversation will address a broad range of issues related to zines, queer aesthetics, independent publishing and the ways in which zines are distributed, archived and exhibited. Because of their DIY production, displaying and archiving queer zines, as well as queer culture more generally, requires creative and inventive practices. Panelists include Amos Mac, creator of transman zine Original Plumbing; Milo Miller and Chris Wilde, founders of the online Queer Zine Archive Project (QZAP); and Mimi Thi Nguyen, assistant professor of gender and women’s studies and Asian American studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and creator of the compilation zine …Race Riot. After much anticipation, the Robert Mapplethorpe archive is now available at the Getty Research Institute. Generously donated by the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, with artworks jointly acquired by the J. Paul Getty Trust and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the archive spans the artist’s career from his student days at Pratt Institute in the 1960s through his more well-known photographs from the 1980s. The archive includes sculpture and assemblages, collages, cut-outs, early drawings and paintings, Polaroids, and examples of large-format photographic prints of flowers, portraits, nudes, and sadomasochistic subjects.

… my wife and children and I were taking a small plane to a Gulf Coast city. During the approach, I was tossed from the plane due to the pilot’s negligent flying: he was coming in hot. I fell through the sky and landed on the beach, miraculously unharmed. By chance, I landed near David Axelord, who helped me to dust myself off and to piece together what had happened to me. He was talking on the phone when I landed and it turned out he was on the phone with the pilot of the plane from which I had just fallen. I became furious and rushed back to the airport to report the pilot for illegally carrying on the phone conversation that had nearly cost me my life. When I got to the airport, he had not reported the incident and was in the Admiral’s Club, drinking. I summoned the police, who would not let me confront him. They went off for a few minutes and returned, having obviously colluded with the pilot. David Axelrod, despite his conflict between being both a witness and a friend of the pilot, looked on sympathetically. Just as I thanked him for trying to help me get justice, I happened on the rest of the people from my flight. They were being held at the gate. My wife, believing I had died, was shocked to see me. The rowdy passengers began to demand answers. The dream ended on a cliffhanger, before I found out if we were able to overcome the cover-up.
